Cape Town is one of the most stunning cities in the world – and the good news is that you don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy it. Whether you’re studying English at Avenue English for a few weeks or a few months, there’s an incredible amount to see and do completely for free. Here are the top 10 free activities every international student should experience.
Hike up Lion’s Head
One of Cape Town’s most iconic hikes, Lion’s Head offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the city, the Atlantic Ocean, and Table Mountain. The trail takes about 2 hours and is manageable for most fitness levels. Gather some of your new school friends and go at sunset for a truly unforgettable experience – and it costs absolutely nothing.
Explore the V&A Waterfront (without spending)
The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is Cape Town’s buzzing harbour precinct. Strolling along the waterfront, watching street performers, browsing the craft markets, and soaking up the harbour atmosphere are all completely free. It’s also a great place to practise your English by chatting with locals and other travellers. At Avenue English we have a lot of fun here every other month, an ice-cream or coffee might be the only money you need to spend!
Visit Camps Bay Beach
Cape Town has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and they’re all free. Camps Bay is the most famous – a long stretch of white sand backed by the Twelve Apostles mountain range. Grab a towel, bring snacks from a nearby supermarket, and spend the afternoon here. The water is cold (thanks to the Atlantic), but the views are worth every visit. Sometimes we take a ball and play some football and other times some board games to enjoy together.
Walk or cycle along the Sea Point Promenade
The Sea Point Promenade is a flat, paved walkway running along the Atlantic coastline. It stretches for several kilometres and is popular with joggers, cyclists, and families. The ocean views are spectacular, and the fresh sea air is a great way to clear your head after a day of classes.
Explore the Company’s Garden
Right in the heart of the city, the Company’s Garden is Cape Town’s oldest garden, originally used to grow vegetables for Dutch East India Company ships. Today it’s a peaceful green space filled with oak trees, squirrels, and rose gardens. It’s free to enter and a perfect spot to sit, read, or revise your English notes.
Visit the Bo-Kaap Neighbourhood
The Bo-Kaap is one of Cape Town’s most photogenic neighbourhoods, famous for its brightly coloured houses and rich Cape Malay heritage. Walking through its cobblestone streets is completely free and offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s multicultural history. It’s a great Instagram moment too.
Attend Free Events at the Iziko South African Museum
The Iziko South African Museum occasionally offers free entry days and public events. Even outside of these, admission is very affordable. The museum covers natural history, African cultures, and the story of South Africa – a great way to understand the country you’re studying in.
Watch the Sunset from Signal Hill
Signal Hill offers some of the best sunset views in all of Cape Town. You can drive or walk up, and entry is completely free. Locals often bring a picnic and a blanket – it’s a wonderful social activity to do with other students from Avenue English. On clear evenings, you can see the whole city light up below you.
Explore Kirstenbosch’s Free Entrance Points
While Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden does charge entry, there are sections of the garden accessible via hiking trails from Table Mountain National Park at no cost. The surrounding greenery and mountain scenery alone make the area worth visiting. Check the South African National Parks website for current free access options.
Join a Free Walking Tour
Cape Town has several free walking tours operating in the city centre, covering areas like the City Bowl, De Waterkant, and the historic centre. These tours run on a tip-only basis, so you can join for free. They’re also a fantastic way to practise conversational English while learning about the city’s fascinating history.
