In June 2011, Avenue English was founded by Vivi van Ketel in Johannesburg with a simple but powerful vision: anyone who wants to learn English as a foreign or second language should feel supported, encouraged, and welcomed in a friendly, nurturing environment.
Fifteen years later, that vision continues to guide everything we do.
From our very first classroom to the vibrant international community we are today, Avenue English has been built on the belief that language learning is about connection – connecting people to new cultures, new opportunities, and new confidence in themselves.
A School Built on Support and Communication
From the beginning, Avenue English embraced the Communicative Method, focusing on real-life communication and delivery. Our classrooms are spaces where students speak, collaborate, laugh, and grow together. English isn’t just studied here – it’s lived and experienced.

Growing from Johannesburg to Cape Town
What began in Johannesburg in 2011 has grown into a school with two exciting study destinations in South Africa.
Students today have the opportunity to study at two campuses:
Johannesburg, where Avenue English was first established and where our journey began
Cape Town, our second centre opened in 2022, offering students the chance to learn English while experiencing one of the world’s most beautiful coastal cities
Both centres share the same welcoming philosophy: supportive teachers, small classes, and a community-focused learning environment where students feel comfortable practicing English every day.
