General English

The General English course focuses on fluency and highlights the practical understanding of English through the four main skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The course books that are used encourage interactive participation so that the student builds confidence in a relaxed environment.

Students receive a full report and level certificate on completion of an eight-week course.

The General English course can be booked for a minimum of two weeks.

Start date: Any Monday

Levels: Beginner to Advanced

Course duration: 2 – 48 weeks

Lessons per week: 20, Monday – Friday 9.00 – 12.30 p.m

For participants of Bildungsurlaub in states requiring 40 lessons (Hessen, Niedersachsen, etc.), the optional cultural and historical lessons offered in the afternoon are obligatory to come to the required 40 weekly lessons.

As a high percentage of people are now working from home we offer this course at a time that is convenient for you. 7.00 a.m or 6.00p.m? Any time can be scheduled and remember that the private course can focus on those specific areas that are challenging – Business writing / presentation skills / general fluency etc.

This is an intensive course focusing on the individuals unique English language requirements. Students taking this course have the opportunity to build self-confidence and achieve their personal learning outcomes.

Lessons are scheduled according to the students and teachers availability.

PART-TIME EVENING CLASSES

Due to demand we are introducing our General English Communication part-time evening course. The course focus is on communication skills and is specifically for foreigners who are working in Johannesburg and only have free time in the evenings.

The course is on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 17h30 – 19h00.

Duration: 8 weeks per half a level

IELTS PREPARATION (INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM)

IELTS preparation

The Cambridge International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an exam that tests the candidate’s English language ability.

An IELTS qualification is required by most British, Australian, Canadian and South African universities and in some American academic institutions. The IELTS qualification is also needed in order to emigrate to or work in most English-speaking countries. The focus of this course is placed on understanding the IELTS test format, and on teaching effective exam techniques. Authentic test materials are used to prepare for the test.

Remember that you need to indicate whether you are doing the Academic or the General exam and the band scores that you require.

IELTS package A – 3 x 60 minute private lessons + mock exam

Register for this course and we schedule your private lessons with our IELTS examiners at times that are convenient for you. These lessons can be done online or at Avenue English.

If you have written the exam before and need to improve your score then we suggest that you do the mock exam first followed by the private lessons.

If this is the first time that you are attempting the exam then we suggest that you have the overview lessons first and then end with the mock exam.

Overview notes are mailed to you once we have received your registration so that you have a good idea of what is expected in terms of format.

The cost for Package A is ZAR 1 500.00

IELTS package B

You can schedule a mock exam and thereafter we can discuss private lessons if needs be for any particular skill. Private lessons are

ZAR 350.00 per 60-minute lesson. These lessons can be online or at Avenue English

The cost of the mock exam is ZAR 550.00 per person

Please note that we also do preparation for the KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, TOEFL and Pte Academic exams

ENGLISH IMPROVEMENT

English Improvement

The English Improvement course is specifically for South Africans who have English as a second or third language. These classes assist students with accuracy in their English language skills, as well as build confidence in order to communicate effectively.

This part-time course is held over 8 Saturdays from 9.00 – 12.30 p.m. at a total of 30 hours and we offer all levels from Elementary to Advanced. There are maximum of 10 students per level.

Course dates for 2022:
05 February – 02 April

07 May – 25 June

23 July – 10 September

01 October – 19 November

The cost of the course is ZAR 2 950.00 which includes all course materials, a final assessment and Certificate of Achievement.

You can confirm your attendance upon payment of ZAR 1 500.00 deposit. The balance of ZAR1 450.00 is due no later than the fourth Saturday of the course.

Please email the application form with your proof of payment / bring the documents in with you when you come for your placement test. The school is open for placement testing every Saturday between 9.00 and 11.00 a.m.

Johannesburg Centre ONLY

For those students who do not have the time to come to class every day, the General English part-time course is scheduled 3 times per week. The student can decide which 3 days to schedule to obtain maximum benefit for their particular English language goals.

This course is not for Beginner or Elementary level as a complete immersion at these levels is required to achieve a certain fluency to be able to pursue a part-time course

Levels: Pre-intermediate to Advanced

Course duration: 2 – 48 weeks

1 lesson: 45 minutes

Lessons per week: 12, Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9.00 – 12.30p.m (or alternative 3 suitable days)

General English Plus

The GE Plus course is the General English course in the morning followed by a private lesson from 1.00 – 2.30 p.m

This course is highly recommended for the student who has limited time to study English as the course can be booked for a minimum of one week. The private lesson from 1.00 – 2.30p.m daily can be used to focus on those areas of the English language that the student finds particularly challenging e.g. pronunciation / fluency / vocabulary enhancement or it can be used for a specific purpose, e.g. Business English / Exam preparation.
